The mission of The Palaestrum is to use gymnastics to build body strength, increase flexibility,
coordination and concentration with fun and safety being of the highest priorities.

Welcome to the Palaestrum

For over 60 years, The Palaestrum has provided quality gymnastics lessons. Started by Charlie Pond, the University of Illinois Gymnastics coach, The Palaestrum is the first school to provide tumbling and trampoline in towns outside of Champaign since 1965. These classes for ages 3 to 17 teach coordination and build strength and flexibility to students that will help with any sport or physical activity they may choose.

The cost of these classes is much less than you would pay to go to a full gymnastics club and they are much more convenient. When you consider your time and the price of gasoline to drive into Champaign or Mattoon you will find a large savings with The Palaestrum. Discounts are available for those with multiple children in the program.

Bill Staley has been the director since taking over from Clinton Smith who started this travel program in 1965. Bill came up through the Palaestrum and has been teaching for over 37 years. He provides a program that is safe and fun for the kids.
